Etymology
Dissimilation of an unattested scn grc *Ἐρικώδης, supposedly derived from grc ἐρείκη -ώδης heath full of, like 1. Compare grc Φοινικώδης Filicudi.
In ancient times also known from scn la Ericūsa (or la Ericussa), from scn grc Ἐρικοῦσσα.
The proposed etymology from grc ἐρείκη should have produced a long ī in the Latin borrowing transcription (*Erīcūsa), which makes the proposal not definitive. Compare grc Ἔρυξ.
Compare, for more, also: grc Φοινικοῦσσα Filicudi, grc Πιθηκοῦσαι Pithecusa, grc Συρᾱ́κουσαι Syracuse and grc Λοπαδοῦσσα Lampedusa.
Eventually compare also it Arcuri.
