gerucht
German
Etymology
de gmh gerüchte (Central German), borrowed from de gml geruchte, gml gerüchte. This northern form replaced earlier gmh geruofte, gmh gerüefte, from goh geruofti. The noun ultimately pertains to the verb de rufen to call (goh ruofan, osx hrōpan).
The Low German form is based on the shift -ft- → -cht- (cf. de Nichte); the same in nl gerucht. Popular etymology later associated the word with de riechen to smell.
