According to one theory, from Old Estonian *Põltoisa(n), compare fi peltoisa. Alternatively from et põld ots field end (Põlluotsa -> *Põltsa-), suffixed with et maa land. Alternatively, from *põldus, an unattested derivation from et põld, which seems unlikely.
