Etymology
fi ala-<naf> Vieska, probably from the rare term fi vieska ford at the lower end of a rapid, which is found in some old dictionaries but has little evidence in dialects. The prefix is because it is located downriver compared to Ylivieska. Rahkonen (2013) remarks that fi vieska may be connected with dialectal fi vieksi river between two bodies of water, although he considers it uncertain due to the phonological and semantic differences.Rahkonen, Pauli.
