Etymology
From sh xil *brentos stag, from sh ine-pro *bʰren- to project; horn, antler. The Illyrian origin is deduced from cms *brendon — grc ἔλαφον deer.Stanisław Rospond Slawische Namenkunde: Die slawischen Ortsnamen 1992 162 The suggestion is due to Anton Mayer (1957), adducing Stephanus of Byzantium De urbibus: "Brettia, insula maris Adriatici habens fluvium Brettium. Hanc Graeci Elaphusam, alii vero Bretanidem appellant". Historically, the island was known in Ancient Greek as grc Βραττία, later appearing in Latin as la Brattia. The "stag" etymology is supported by Stephanus of Byzantium, who noted the island was called grc Ἐλαφοῦσα (“deer island”) by the Greeks.
