English
Alternative forms
Traditionally written as Mac-, and later also as Mac-.
Etymology
From en ga,gd mac son.
Pronunciation
en /mək/ /mæk/
Prefix
A patronymic used to form common Irish and Scottish names, similar to the English -son.
Usage notes
The surname prefix is often stressed (even with the contracted spelling en Mc-), and the pronunciation of names must be learned individually.
Whereas Mac- may be followed by a capital or lowercase letter, en Mc- generally only takes a capital letter:
en Mackenzie or en MacKenzie, but en McKenzie and not **Mckenzie
