Etymology
de Gesicht -s- Erker face oriel. Possibly coined as a linguistic purism to replace de Nase (incorrectly perceived to be a loanword from la nāsus or one of its Romance descendants) or, more likely, as a satire pointing out the absurdities of linguistic purism. Often misattributed to Philipp von Zesen.en Joseph Salmons A History of German 2012 OUP Oxford https://books.google.com/books?id=CHpsrpOqLzQC&pg=PA282&dq=%22Gesichtserker%22&hl=&cd=19&source=gbs_api#v=onepage&q=%22Gesichtserker%22&f=false 978-0-19-969794-6 282 it is claimed in many sources (e.g. Schwarz 1967: 99) that Zesen mistook Nase for a loanword and proposed replacing it with Gesichtserker However, it appears that Zesen never used the word in his writings and it first appears in print much later
