Scottish Gaelic
Etymology
Originally likely from gd sga sreb, sga srib stream38760 sreb, srib + sga linn pool, lake,30274 1 linn borrowed into gd gmw-msc Stirveling, via gd enm-esc Strivelin, enm Strivelyn, and then reborrowed into early Scottish Gaelic. The ending is perhaps due to a reanalysis of the sco -ing ending as indicating a verbal noun, resulting in Gaelic gd -ea(dh).Clancy Thomas Owen The Etymologies of Pluscarden and Stirling 26 July 2021 The Journal of Scottish Names Studies 17 https://clog.glasgow.ac.uk/ojs/index.php/JSNS/article/view/143 2054-9385 https://web.archive.org/web/20240910075452/https://clog.glasgow.ac.uk/ojs/index.php/JSNS/article/view/143 10 September 2024.
