Etymology
From vi rạch giá small irrigation canal bean sprouts.
According to another etymology, the city name possibly from vi km ក្រមួនស white wax. But, this phonological change lacks conviction. Specifically, km ក្រមួន *kra is easier to become vi tra *tra / vi trác *trác and km ស *sa is easier to become vi sa *sa. In the Southern dialects, vi giá is pronounced with a voiced palatal consonant approximant /j/, so it is unlikely that the voiceless /s/ becomes voiced /z/. (compare vi Sóc Trăng, vi Trà Vinh, vi Sa Đéc, etc).
