Appendix:Variations of "sam"
German
Etymology
From de gmh -sam, from de goh -sam, from de gmw-pro *-sam, from de gem-pro *-samaz, from de gem-pro *samaz, from de ine-pro *somHós. Cognate with en -some and nl -zaam. Related also to goh samo the same and goh sama similary.
Pronunciation
de /za(ː)m/ [zaːm] [zam] chiefly southern also [s-]
The prescriptive standard has a long vowel, but in practice both forms are common and widely unmarked.
Apart from southerners with a generally devoiced /z/, some speakers devoice it when de -sam follows obstruents, e.g. in de wirksam. (Compare the suffixes de -sen and de -sel, where this is the rule.)
