Greater Armenia, beginning at the mountains known as the Paryadres, is separated, as we have already stated, from Cappadocia by the river Euphrates, and, where that river turns off in its course, from Mesopotamia, by the no less famous river Tigris. Etymology
nb, based on nb la Armenia, from nb grc Ἀρμενία, from nb peo 𐎠𐎼𐎷𐎡𐎴 Armenia. The Old Persian form Armina is first attested around 520 BCE in the Behistun Inscription of Darius I, where it denotes an Achaemenid province; the corresponding Babylonian version instead uses the older regional name Urartu. The related Old Persian form Arminiya- denoted an Armenian or inhabitant of the province.
The ultimate origin of the Old Persian name is uncertain. One proposal traces it through an unidentified nb arc - form to reconstructed nb xur *armini inhabitant of Arme, but this explanation is not securely established.
