Finnish
Etymology
Originally from farm names in North Ostrobothnia. One possibility is that the place name originally contains a fi smi word. Another possibility is a dialectal fi mesku arctic raspberry (a kind of diminutive from fi mesi; compare fi mesimarja), which may have motivated a farm name in an area with many arctic raspberry bushes. The fi -s may be from fi -nen (oblique stem fi -s(e)-).
