Etymology
sa causative :af -आ -प्- -अय॑ति<id:causative suffix> 1
From sa -आ -अय॑ति<id:causative suffix>, with an intervening euphonic sa -प्- to break the hiatus. With respect to the semantics/development, compare ine-pro *-eh₂yéti, the origin of la -āre the whole first conjugation in the present together with its Proto-Italic ancestor itc-pro *-āō, grc -ᾰ́ω contracted verb, gem-pro *-ōną referring to the whole conjugation in which the infinitive is gem-pro *-ōną and ine-bsl-pro *-ā́ˀtei whence the infinite sla-pro *-ati, referring again to the whole conjugation.

Suffix
-आ॒पय॑ति
forms some denominative verbs, sometimes with causative meaning
sa कर्मकार कर्मकारापयति worker, servant causes to work as a servant
forms some verbs of secondary derivation from roots
sa वृध्<t:to grow> -आ॒पय॑ति व॒र्धा॒पय॑ति<t:increases, exalts>
Usage notes
This suffix is distinct from the causative sa -आ॒पय॑ति encountered from roots ending in sa -आ- + sa -अय॑ति with intervening sa -प्-, as in sa स्था॒पय॑ति.
In the Middle Indo-Aryan period, this suffix increasing eclipsed the related sa -अयति in the causative sense. As with sa -अयति, an entirely new verbal paradigm could be based on such a casuative/denominative verb by taking a seṭ the root to end in sa -आप्- or sa -आपय्-.
