Etymology
sv Gullberg -s vass Gold Mountain's Reeds. Originally referring to the former reed-covered wetland extending from sv Nordstaden to the hill sv Gullberg Gold Mountain, reclaimed in the 1840s.
It is unknown what kind of "gold" the name refers to. The hill has since been extensively blasted, possibly obscuring the original basis for the name. Hypotheses include shimmering minerals, rocks covered in yellow lichen, a reference to a mountain mentioned in Eirspennill, or a general term for praise, fertility and apotropaic.sv Ortnamnen i Göteborgs och Bohus län II 11 1925 Elanders Boktryckeri Aktiebolag Gothenburg https://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sprakochfolkminnen:diva-254 1 0284-1908 URN: urn:nbn:se:sprakochfolkminnen:diva-254
