Etymology
en :bor fr:Niger 1
en fr Niger. For further etymology, commonly linked by folk etymology to la niger black, which likely influenced the modern spelling.
Some sources give the term to en tmh - roots, deriving it from a claimed tmh gher n-gheren or tmh egereou n-igereouen river of rivers.C. K. Meek, The Niger and the Classics: The History of a Name. The Journal of African History. Vol. 1, No. 1 (1960), pp. 1-17 Compare Tarifit rif iɣzar-rif n-rif iɣezran.
Older sources derive Niger, via a series of mistranslations and geographic misplacements by Greek, Roman and Arab geographers, from Ptolemy's descriptions of the wadi Gir (in modern Algeria) and the "Lower Gir" (or "Ni-Gir") to the south.compare: The Penny Cyclopædia of the Society for the Diffusion of useful Knowledge, vol. 16 (Murillo—Organ), 1840, NIGER, or rather NIGIR

Etymology
nb, based on nb fr Niger, the French name of the country and the Niger River. The country is named after the river.
The river name has been variously explained. Store norske leksikon derives it from nb tmh n'igherren flowing water; river. Another commonly cited analysis connects it with a Tuareg expression egereou n-igereouen, literally “river of rivers”. The exact historical form and deeper origin of the river name are uncertain.
The modern European spelling was probably influenced by Latin la niger black, but the river name is not generally considered to derive from the Latin adjective.
Parallel international forms include nn Niger, da Niger, sv Niger, de Niger and en Niger.
