English
Etymology
Borrowed from en nl Simpelveld.
Proper noun
en municipality p/Limburg c/Netherlands.
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as semplouei and senplouoir in 1155. Derived from the Gallo-Roman toponym nl la *Sempervivetum Evergreen, here perhaps referring to a forest of holly. Proposed derivations from la *Simploviacum or a compound of odt semp rush and odt lo light forest do not match well with the oldest attestations. The current form of the toponym developed under the influence of a folk-etymological reinterpration of the name as a compound of nl simpel simple and nl veld field.
