Dutch
Etymology
First attested as belven in 1326. Etymology nl 1. The oldest attestations indicate the name is a compound formed from an uncertain first element and nl veld field. The proposed reading of the name as a compound of nl gem-pro *bala- white and nl ven bog, marsh is incorrect.
