German
Etymology
From de nds Smöker, from the verb nds smöken to smoke, from de gml smöken, from de gmw-pro *smaukijan. The semantic motivation is unclear. Some compare de Schinken ham and thus interpret de Schmöker as “smoked ham”. Others compare sv lunta fuse and derive it from the practice of using pages from old books for lighting pipes. It could also refer simply to casual reading performed while smoking.
