Alternative forms

Etymology
gmw-cfr goh gmw-pro 2
From gmw-cfr gmh āl, from gmw-cfr gem-pro *ēlaz. Cognate with de Aal, en eel etc.
The front-vowel byforms are backformations from the gmh - umlauted plural gmh æle. The same also explains the alternative feminine gender. The form gmw-cfr Iel would be the strictly phonetic development in most areas, but is in practice the rarest because of the influence of the original singular. (Note that this form does underlie in lb Éil.)
