Etymology
nb, based on nb la Libya, from nb grc Λιβύη. The Ancient Greek name is based on the ethnonym of the Libu, a North African people whose name is attested in Egyptian as egy rbw Libu; Libya and later in Punic as xpu 𐤋𐤁𐤉. The immediate transmission route into Norwegian is nb 1 1.
In ancient Greek geography, the name originally referred to the land west of the Nile and was later extended to Africa as a whole. The modern state name revives this ancient geographical name; Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and Fezzan were brought together under Italian colonial administration under the name Libya.
Parallel international adaptations include nn Libya, da Libyen, sv Libyen, de Libyen, nl Libië, fr Libye and en Libya.
