Etymology
First attested as nunspiet in 1313. Etymology nl 1. The toponym is explained as dum *nuewenspete (derived from nl dum nuwe new and dum spete dug ground) or alternatively as dum *nums-speet (derived from nl dum nums nobody's, no-man's and dum spete dug ground). The first etymology is taken to mean "freshly dug ground", while the second etymology is explained as "no-man's land that anybody can use". The latter etymology fits slightly better with earlier forms of the name.
