Suffix
-able
that which should, can or may be done
sa गम् गमनीय to go that which can, should or is to be reached or gone to
sa कृ करणीय to do that which can, should or is to be done
Usage notes
sa -अनीय shows ability, compulsion, intention or obligation.
It is added to the root form of a verb to form an adjective. For example sa गम् to go becomes sa गमनीय, which means accessible, reachable, or that which should be reached or gone to.
The subject in a sentence using sa -अनीय is generally in the passive voice. Hence the subject is in the instrumental case and the object is in the nominative. Example:
sa त्वया कर्म करणीयम्। The work must be done by you.
Here, sa करणीय should/must be done is an adjective for sa कर्मन् कर्म work. Notice sa करणीय and sa कर्म are both in the nominative, while sa युष्मद् त्वया by you is in the instrumental.
This suffix is called sa अनीयर् in Sanskrit.
