Latin
Etymology
From a pre-Roman place-name of uncertain origin, possibly a compound of und *ili- town, settlement; fortress and und *-ipa, the latter possibly related to the southern la xib - toponymic element und *-ippo, perhaps also meaning “town” or “fortress”. The name has variously been interpreted as Iberian, Turdetanian or a hybrid of the two.
One proposed interpretation is approximately “town of the fortress”, although the meaning of the second element remains disputed. Related to la Ilipula, another ancient settlement name, sometimes interpreted as a diminutive of la Ilipa.José María García Martín, “Acerca del topónimo Niebla”, pp. 876–878.
