Dutch
Etymology
First attested as Gaesberg in the 16th century. Compound of an unclear first element and nl berg hill, elevated place. The first element has been interpreted as a derivation of dialectal nl scheizen to get stones or (incorrectly) as related to nl De Scheijdt, a nearby (former) hamlet. The toponym has also been linked to the Schaesberg family of Aachen. Formerly an independent village.
