satakunta English Etymology en :bor fi:Satakunta + 1 Proper noun en region c/Finland. Finnish thumb|upright|Map of Satakunta (modern region) in Finland thumb|upright|Map of Satakunta (historical province) in Finland Etymology First attested in 1331 (in Latin text as la sigillis terre sathagundhae). Possibly from fi sata hundred kunta, probably as an indirect 1 fi gmq-osw hundari; compare en hundred, referring to both the number and a kind of an administrative division. It has sometimes been proposed that the latter component fi kunta may derive from the same root (gem-pro *hundą) as well, either only in fi Satakunta or as a whole (the latter is unlikely, however). Another theory, proposed by Nuutinen (1989), is that the first element fi sata- is a Germanic loanword meaning "landing place, shore" (gem-pro *staþaz), from which also fi satama is derived.Nuutinen, Olli. (1989). Satakunnan synty ja Kainuun kato Virittäjä, 93(1), 11. Heikkilä (2014) considers it most likely that the name of the region has dual origins. The region may have originally been a part of Tavastia or even part of a 'Kvenland' (fi Kainuu, before the term began to refer to a region further north). The etymology, as proposed by Nuutinen, would explain the original place name fi Satakunta referring to the shores at what was then the mouth of the Kokemäenjoki river and settlements by it. The name would then have been adopted for the wider region, perhaps only shortly before the Swedish invasions in the mid-13th century, partly also due to its reference (as understood folk-etymologically) to a military division gathered from around a hundred men.Mikko K.
