Etymology
From de gmh krane, from de goh krano crane, from de gmw-pro *kranō, from de gem-pro *kranô crane.thumb|Sense 1
thumb|Sense 2
The word was used metaphorically for the lifting device due to the similar appearance of the bird’s neck and head. This metaphorical use is first attested in de dum krane, and thence spread to several European languages (compare en crane, fr grue). The sense “water tap” is restricted to a smaller territory (compare nl kraan, lb Krunn).
