kemio
Finnish
fi:+nsaari (saari)
Etymology
According to SPNK, from earlier fi *Kymitty with unclear development. However, Heikkilä (2014) simply associates this with the place names of fi Kemi and fi Kymi, arguing that they are all of the same origin (ultimately from gem-pro *kwēmijaz easily passable, accessible), perhaps via Sami. He states that the Swedish name sv Kimitö derives from an earlier fi *Kimittä < fi *Kimiccä, from a Sami diminutive literally meaning small fairway, passage.Mikko K. Heikkilä, Bidrag till Fennoskandiens språkliga förhistoria i tid och rum (2014). pp. 255–259 Heikkilä does not, however, expound on the development of the Finnish form fi Kemiö, in particular its ending.
