Middle Dutch
Etymology
Probably from dum sint saint Claes shortened form of dum Nicolaas 1.sinterklaas
The -er in the first component is of uncertain origin. Suggested to be due to the influence of other saints' names, such as Sinter Meis (from Sint Remeis) and Sinter Makel (from Sint Remakel). Also suggested is that sinter is a feminine dative form of sint, from the expression dum sinter claesmisse Saint Nicolas' mass. Otherwise thought to be a dialectal form of sint or from an earlier *sinten(e) (from sint Ni-).Sinterklaas en andere sinter-namen Taal en Tongval https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_taa007196801_01/_taa007196801_01_0020.php Ria Jansen-Sieben 20 1968 104 https://web.archive.org/web/20220819051321/https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_taa007196801_01/_taa007196801_01_0020.php 19 August 2022 Compare also modern Dutch nl Sintermaarten.
