Etymology
From a Continental la cel - place-name. Falileyev reconstructs la cel-pro *ad-boudiio-ko-, derived from the personal name cel-pro *Boudios, from cel-pro *boudi victory, with cel-pro *-ākos.Alexander Falileyev (2007), Dictionary of Continental Celtic Place-Names, s.v. “Abodiacum”.
Alternatively, Greule derives the name from the Celtic personal name cel-pro *Abudios, though he does not give a meaning.Greule, cited in treatments of the ancient place-name Abodiacum.
The comparison with cy hafod summer dwelling, from cy haf summer + cy bod dwelling, abode, is phonologically and morphologically less convincing.
