First attested as nuweboxwoude around 1312. Compound of nl dum nieu new, either dum Bok a personal name or dum bux common box, Buxus sempervirens and dum wout marsh forest, swamp forest. The toponym formerly contrasted with Oudeboxwoude (currently called nl Hauwert).
