Usage notes
In An-chʻing, ʻ marks aspiration. Thomas Francis Wade prescribed an “inverted comma” for this purpose,en 1886 Wade Thomas Francis Thomas Francis Wade Walter Caine Hillier Yü Yen Tzŭ Êrh Chi https://archive.org/details/yyentzuerhchip01wadeuoft/ 2nd I Shanghai Kelly & Walsh 7 https://archive.org/details/yyentzuerhchip01wadeuoft/page/7/ and historical publications used varying comma-like glyphs for the mark. The character used in this entry is the Unicode modifier letter turned comma (U+02BB). An ordinary apostrophe is also frequently substituted for the aspiration mark, as in An-ch'ing.
