bratwurst

Etymology
From de gmh brātwurst, from de goh brātwurst. The term originally denoted a sausage (de Wurst) made of Brät (goh brāto), but has come to be used for a sausage that is fried or is suited to being fried (de braten). Kluge suggests the modern word might be a conflation of those two etymologies rather than a derivation of only the first one.Friedrich Kluge, Etymologisches Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache (24th edition), page 146 (de Gruyter, Berlin, 2002; 3-11-017472-3)
