First attested as thuchterthe in 1207. Etymology nl unknown. One tentative etymology interprets the name as a derivation of nl groot great, big and a second compound noun formed from nl ducht community and nl herde uncultivated land, heathland. The element nl groot was added to distinguish the settlement from nl Klein Dochteren.
