ro grc grk-pro ine-pro
ro la-lat -izō.
Used as an infix in Romanian verb conjugations (similarly to how Spanish and Portuguese use the unrelated es -ecer from Latin la -escere, from la -escō (as in es parecer, es padecer, es merecer, etc). The suffix does not appear in the infinitive form of the verb in Romanian. However, the infinitive form of the Romanian suffix can also be found fossilized as part of the infinitive of a few verbs, such as ro boteza, ro râncheza, ro undeza.
The same Vulgar Latin ending resulted in it -eggiare, es,pt -ear, ca,oc -ejar, and fr -oyer. The Aromanian equivalent is rup -edz or rup -edzu.
Compare also the Romanian suffix later borrowed ultimately from the same source (through French), ro 1 -iza.

Spanish
Etymology 1
From es la -ēs, the accusative plural ending of most third declension nouns. However some popular theories state that it can be a borrowing from pre-Roman languages (given the various forms the suffix took in the Middle Ages). Compare pt -es. es
Alternative forms
es -es
Suffix
mfbysense -
es patronymic patronymic surname suffix, that forms many Spanish surnames
es Enrique Enríquez
es Lope López
es Gutierre Gutiérrez
es Sancho Sánchez
Usage notes
Spanish patronymics are often formed by substituting "-ez" for a final "o" or "e" in the first name of the father of the person whose surname is so formed. Thus, the son of Hernando becomes "Hernández", the son of Álvaro becomes "Álvarez", and the son of Enrique becomes "Enríquez".
For some Spanish patronymics, the suffix is not -ez but es -iz or es -oz, as in es Ortiz, es Muñiz, es Muñoz. The name es Cortez is not a patronymic but derived from the adjective es cortés courteous.
Derived terms
es -ez (patronymic)
