Etymology
First attested as Groterwierum in 1529. nl fy Greate Wierrum, derived in turn from a compound of nl ofs grāt great, big (from nl gmw-pro *graut, from nl gem-pro *grautaz) and the dative plural form of ofs wier artificial mound used for habitation (probably related to gmw-pro *warjan to ward off, defend, protect).
