Marsian
Etymology
ims Disputed.
Perhaps from a place name ims *aproficulum.
Perhaps from ims itc-pro *aprōnsk(e)los.
Perhaps connected to the name la Aprufenius, found in another inscription.
It may be connected with another Marsian term ims aprusculani and the term la Aprusconi, a cognomen discovered in the province of Venetia et Histria. The linguist Blanca María Prósper proposes, based on these possible cognates, that the term derives from a Sabellic ethnonym itc-pro *aprūtsko-, itself from itc-pro *aprūtikos. Prósper suggests that itc-pro *aprūtikos derives from itc-pro *aprūto-, from itc-pro *aprōtos, itself from itc-pro *apros + itc-pro *-tos.
