Romanian Esechioi is a village in the Ostrov commune of Constanța County, Romania, with historical Turkish roots. It is located in the Dobruja region and is associated with the protected Padurea Esechioi (Esechioi Forest), a designated natural area covering approximately 234.7 hectares. Etymology Borrowed from Turkish İsa köy or İsaköy, from İsa (a male personal name) + köy (“village”).Third Turkish Cultural Congress. Ghiță, A. A. (1999). ‘‘Ottoman place names in Dobruja’’. https://isamveri.org/pdfdrg/D075606/1999/1999_GHIATAA.pdf Based on Ottoman toponymic patterns in Dobruja, the name derives from an Ottoman Turkish as İsa Köy or İsaköy (“İsa’s village”). The name İsa was a commonly used male name in the Ottoman frontier communities in that period. Also İsa Köy is the name used from the Turkish and Tatar communities in Romania. A comparable case is found south of the modern Romanian–Bulgarian border in present-day Chernolik, Bulgaria, historically known as Kara-İsaköy (also rendered Karaisaköy). The Romanian form KaraEsechioi appears in historical usage and may reflect a phonetic adaptation of this Ottoman name, rather than a literal translation.
