English
Etymology
Borrowed from en nl Beesel.
Proper noun
en municipality p/Limburg c/Netherlands.
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as Bisela in 1173. Potentially a compound of nl bies bulrush, Scirpus and nl lo open place in a forest. Proposed derivations from nl dum bise hind or dum bise black, dum bize are incorrect; all three terms are loans from Middle French, and Beesel was located outside of the sphere of influence of the Romance languages. Compare nl Beesd, nl Bisselt and nl Lage Bijssel.
