Etymology
At least in Finland, originally the name of the river (fi Kemijoki). The place name in Finland at least has traditionally been derived from the archaic Finnish term fi kemi dry, poor meadow; quite barren land with dry and relatively thin soil. Heikkilä (2014) disputes this etymology, and instead argues that the name is rather, like fi Kymi (as Heikkilä argues), ultimately from fi gem-pro *kwēmijaz easily accessible or passable; the form fi Kemi would be derived via a fi smi language.Mikko K. Heikkilä, Bidrag till Fennoskandiens språkliga förhistoria i tid och rum (2014). pp. 255–259 Rahkonen (2013) on the other hand associates the names with fi urj-fpr-pro *käme, which may have been borrowed through a Uralic substrate language.Rahkonen, Pauli. Suomen etymologisesti läpinäkymätöntä vesistönimistöä. Virittäjä 1/2013. pp. 23—24. The surname derives from place names, or separately from the aforementioned fi kemi (which, if not the origin of the proper noun, is likely of the same origin anyway). Early attestations of the place name include fi Kijm (1386), fi Kym (1443), sv Kem sokn (1445).
