German
Etymology
From de gmh dechant, gmh techant, from de goh tehhant, goh tehhan, from de gmw-pro *dekan deacon, from de la decanus dean. de Dekan, a 15th-century borrowing.
In gml dēken, the full vowel in the second syllable was protected by adaptation to various Latin suffixes. The initial d- was also restored by relatinisation; compare already goh degan (possibly from spoken Romance).
