en 1944 A.J.Cronin The Green Years Little, Brown, and Company 62 "And I have such a horrible name. Think of it... Kate. Who would take Kate on a Moonlight Cruise...or out to the Minstrels at the point. If you ever do find me in the company of a strange young man, call me Irene. Promise me."
en 2014 Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway: The Early Cases: A Dr Ruth Galloway Mysteries Collection Hachette UK 9781848669734 Ruth did know, but Kate was not named after Hecate or Auntie Catherine or Santa Caterina of Siena (suggested by a Catholic priest of Ruth's acquaintance). She was simply Kate because Ruth liked the name. It was attractive without being twee, strong without being hard. You could hear it prefaced by Doctor or followed by MP. At the same time it was cute enough for a baby.

Etymology
19th century, from de nds Kaat, Kate, from de gml kāte, a late spelling of gml kōte, from de osx *kota, from de gmw-pro *kotā, from de gem-pro *kutą *kutǭ ~ *kutą stall, tent, whence also nl kot, en cot, en cottage.
The a-spelling reflects the merger of gml â, ā, ō into /ɔː/ in most Low German dialects; Standard German /aː/ is analogous. The spelling de Kote may have been disfavoured in part because of its resemblence to unrelated de Kot dirt, excrement.
The word may be of non-Indo-European origin and is perhaps derived from de urj-pro *kota; compare de fi kota hut, house and de hu ház house. On the other hand, compare goh hutta, whence de Hütte, nl hut, en hut.kuta 313-14
