la Roman god Ceres goddess of agriculture
la New Latin astronomy Ceres dwarf planet
la figuratively food, bread, fruit, corn, grain, etc.
la Virgil Aeneid 1 177 179 Tum Cererem corruptam undīs Cereāliaque armaexpediunt fessī rērum; frūgēsque receptāset torrēre parant flammīs et frangere saxō. Then, weary of [these] circumstances, they brought out [the grain of] Ceres, soaked with seawater, and the utensils of Ceres; and they prepared both to roast with flames and to grind with stone that grain [which] had been recovered.
Declension
Very rarely found in the plural (cf. la sacerdōs Cerērum found in one inscription, referring to Ceres along with Proserpina).
The genitive singular la Cereris has an alternative Old Latin form la Cererus, with the rare third-declension genitive singular ending la -us consonant-stem genitive suf instead of the standard Classical Latin ending la -is.

Etymology
nb, based on nb la Cerēs Ceres, the Roman goddess of grain and agriculture, from nb itc-pro *Kerēs with grain; Ceres. De Vaan reconstructs the latter from a Proto-Indo-European s-stem *ḱerh₁/₃-os (“nourishment, grain”), ultimately from *ḱerh₁/₃- (“to feed”).
The name has traditionally also been compared with Latin la creō to create, beget and la crēscō to grow, a comparison still given in some Norwegian reference works. De Vaan, however, regards la crēscō as belonging to a different Proto-Indo-European root.
The astronomical sense is named after the Roman goddess. The dwarf planet was discovered by Giuseppe Piazzi in 1801; Piazzi initially proposed the name Ceres Ferdinandea, additionally honouring Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies Ferdinand, but the second element was subsequently dropped.
Cognate with xfa 𐌂𐌄𐌓𐌄𐌔 Ceres and osc 𐌊𐌄𐌓𐌓𐌝 Ceres, dative singular. More distantly, compare grc κορέννυμι to satiate, feed, lt šerti to feed, non hirsi, osx hirsi and goh hirso millet.
