gans Gans -gans
Luxembourgish
Etymology
lb gem-pro ine-pro 1
Backformation from lb gmh gense, plural of gmh gans, from lb goh gans, from lb gmw-pro *gans.
Luxembourgish and the surrounding dialects originally had forms with (sporadic?) loss of pre-fricative nasal (as also in the pronoun lb eis). The replacement of these forms under eastern influence began at an early stage, but the original form is still conserved in now archaic dialectal lb Gaus (plural lb Gäis).
Pronunciation
lb /ɡæns/ [ɡæn(t)s]
Noun
f
goose
