Etymology
nb, based on nb en Swaziland, from en Swazi land Swazi country, territory. English en Swazi is ultimately from nb ss Mswati, the regnal name of Mswati II, after whom the Swazi people came to be named.
The English ethnonym may have been transmitted through a neighbouring Nguni form such as Zulu zu iSwazi. Mswati II greatly expanded and consolidated the kingdom during the nineteenth century. The deeper etymology of the personal name ss Mswati is uncertain.
