Dutch
Etymology
First attested as de apeltre in 1139. Likely a compound of nl odt apel apple and odt *tere tree. Proposed derivations from gem-pro *apuldra- apple tree or nl odt apuldra apple tree are phonologically problematic. The element odt *tere appears to have been reinterpreted as nl heem home, settlement at some point. Compare nl Apeldoorn, nl Aperloo, nl Ter Apel, en Apuldram, de Apeldorn and de Appeldorn. See also nl Elsteren.
