German
Alternative forms
de Gaupe Southern Germany, Austria
Etymology
From late de gmh gūpe. Further origin de 1. Since the word is apparently from de gmw-rfr - dialects, identity with de Kuppe top, knoll, itself also a Central German form, is possible. The long vowel is problematic, however, though it might be due to conflation with a related word; compare nl kuif quiff, tuft of hair sticking out, non kúfr knoll. Alternatively, possibly from a group of dialectal words for "to look", which may be related to de gucken.
