Noun

absinth (liquor)
Verlaine, who is weak and always gives in to himself, cannot pass a coffee-house or a bar without knocking down an absinth, a brandy or a curaçao, and the alcohol brings out an erratic, evil brutality in this otherwise nervous, delicate man. He suddenly becomes belligerent, starts hitting his friends just like Gottfried Keller in his years in Berlin, and so, gradually and persistently, the absinth washes out all the softness and gentleness from this weak person and turns him into someone alien to himself.
