Dutch
Etymology
First attested as in halen in 1217. Compound of nl hoog high, elevated and a toponym of nl unknown origin. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from a term cognate to dialectal nl hal barren, dry and nds-nl hal frozen ground or, alternatively, a derivation from a term cognate to ang halh corner, hiding place. The element nl hoog was added to distinguish the settlement from nl Laaghalen. Compare nl Halen.
