kerze
German

Etymology
From de gmh kerze, from de goh kerza, goh charza, from either de la cērāta covered with wax or la charta (“sheet of papyrus”, in this case referring to layers of birch bark from which candles were made). The latter explanation is typically preferred, though the former is semantically more suggestive. Compare nl kaars, hrx Kerz, lb Käerz.
