English Etymology en sh Gnjilane//Гњилане. Proper noun en city/and/district c/Kosovo en Gjilan Translations Gjilan Serbo-Croatian sh Alternative forms sh Gilane Gnjilan Giljan dated Etymology Already attested as zls-chs Гнилꙗне (1405). Most likely a derivation from sh gnjȉo//гњи̏о rotten, compare archaic sh gnjilan//гњилан muddy, because of the muddy soil characterising of the town. Traditionally the local urban pronunciation was sh Gilane, presumably by influence of the Albanian and Turkish forms which dropped the /ɲ/, see sq Gjilan, while in the neighbouring countryside it was retained as sh Gnjilane, which is the form that was ultimately chosen as standard. See the quote below, as well as Johann Georg von Hahn's observations at de Gilan Gilan ~ Gnilan (1868). Pronunciation sh Proper noun n sh Gnjilane city/and/district c/Kosovo sh М. В. The Turks call this town Gilhane and Kilan, the Serbian citizens call it Gilane, and the surrounding and closest Serbian villagers call it Gnjilane. Here, the townspeople say Gilane, and the villagers Gnjilane. I have read Gnjilan and Giljan in Serbian books, and on Karić's map it says Gnjilan. I believe that the most correct is Gnjilane, as the villagers say, and it probably is, because the ground is muddy. There is no greater danger for cars and travelers than around this town when it gets muddy. The locals (the townspeople who live in the town with the Turks and mix with them, and according to the Turkish distorted pronunciation, have become accustomed to Gilane) now say Gilane; and the closest surroundings, the Serbian villagers (who are the most authoritative for the purity of the language) speak Gnjilane.
